GrafCompounder Tutorial and Literature

Program Description

GrafCompounder is a software, which enables you to create recipes for Rubber, TPE, TP and other compounds from any historic recipe & property database.

GrafCompounder program was developed not only to allow the simple search in such larger data sets, but to simulate formulas as a result according to target values. This can be a property or even ingredient values.

GrafCompounder is based on a Multi Factor Optimization, which allows to use selected data sets of limited size in contrast to AI (Artificial Intelligence) or neuronal network programs, which require a large amount of data.

The mathematics behind GrafCompounder is called "Multi Objective Optimization" (MOO) or "Multi Objective Algorithm" (MOA). The result of a calculation is a solution that represents the best tradeoff between competing objectives. The solution can a be so-called Pareto Optimal Solution, or a solution according the Weighted Sum -, Weighted Metric Method or the e-Constraint Method for example. The algorithm to handle this kind of multi target problems is called Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm (MOEA). GrafCompounder follows such an evolutionary algorithm which operates on a set of candidate solutions. Basically the software calculates a numeric solution using a gradient walking method combining and crossblending all data during the calculation in tiny simultaneous steps in search for an optimal compromise. At the end of the calculation a number is displayed on the screen, which indicates how close the result matches the target values found so far. In case of conflicting targets a perfect solution might not exist, in which case the best compromise is calculated. If accepted by the user, a newly created recipe with its properties is displayed. This calculated mixture is then tested in the laboratory and the properties are to be checked in a confirmation test. Often the process ends here successfully. If it turns out that the specified mixture does not meet expectations, this mixture can at least be used as a starting mixture in a DoE. In this way, more knowledge is gained about the influence of ingredients on the properties of the mixture.

Many laboratory tests can be avoided in the search for a statistically sound solution if GrafCompounder is combined with Statistic Experimental Design (DoE).

The GrafCompounder enables you to analyze your database and identify faulty compound data, because it allows to identify each compound recipe with its ratio the calculated compound is composed off. This program feature is extremly helpful, if your confirmation experiment will result a difference with the calculated compound properties larger than the 95% confidence interval.

With a database, which has a sufficient high amount of compounds, you are able to use the GrafCompounder as a compound simulation tool.

GrafCompounder 3.211 Tutorial:

The Version 3.211 has a couple of new features in addition to the program features of version 2.004, which are explained in detail in this tutorial.

  • Calculation of the Grand Total sum of phr.
  • Density calculation.
  • Cost calculation: cost per volume and cost per mass.
  • Merger Function to bring different worksheets in one data table.
  • Fruequency distribution of either ingredients or physicals in the data base as bar charts.
With the new functions in the GrafCompounder 3.211 more information needed, like the cost and density of the ingredients and a code for each ingredients and property.
The program opens and stores data in its own file format: "____.gc" with "open file" in pull down menue. The export in a table calculation program is possible with copy & paste as usual.

GrafCompounder 2.004 Tutorial:

The Version 2.004 has features, which are explained in detail in its tutorial. The program allows to store the data in its own file format: ____.gc, but the export in a table calculation program is possible as well via copy & paste.
Two new columns are added in the working screen of the program:

  • The first column shows the minimum values of each row, whether it is an ingredient or property,
  • the second column shows the maximum value in each row.
This information prevents the use of calculation criteria, which are not supported by the database.
The figure below shows a screen shot of the Grafcompounder 2.004 with a recipe dataset in the left screen, the "criteria" window with the maximum and minimum columns and the "output" window and a sample recipe calculation according to the performance criteria shown.

Minimum hardware and software requirements

The GrafCompounder software runs on Windows® XP or Windows® Vista with at least 512 MB RAM.

With Windows® 7 / Windows® 8 / Windows® 10 at least 1 GB RAM is needed.

For the first time a whole design of experiment [DoE] is simulated with the GrafCompounder Software. The results are published at the Tire Tech 2015, 10.-12. February 2015 in Cologne under the title: CARD - Computer Aided Recipe Development in the session: "Smart Tire Factory."
A second publication is printed in RFP 04/2016 under the title:
Simulation of a statistical experimental design with a new solftware tool.
